The nationaly fraternity of Alpha Chi Rho is dedicated to serving five philanthropies: Feed the Children, Autism Society of America, Children’s Wish Foundation, American Cancer Society, and Habitat of Humanity. The Delta Sigma Phi chapter supports the local community in addition to these five philanthropies.
Founded over 35 years ago, Feed the Children is an organization with the goal to end hunger in children across the world. They are currently responsible for providing food to over 350,000 children a day.
Children’s Wish Foundation was founded to help bring happiness to terminally-ill children and their families. They do so through their wish fulfilment program, in which they will grant a child’s wish, regardless of what it may be, and cover all necessary expenses for the trip.
Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to helping build homes and communities, so that everyone can have affordable, dependable housing. They hope their efforts can help end the cycle of poverty by allowing families to focus their spending on other essentials besides housing.
In addition to our commitment to our fraternity’s five national philanthropies, our chapter is heavily involved in bettering the Worcester community. We hold a number of annual philanthropy events, from helping run an arthritis walk to raising money for the national philanthropies.
Our chapter holds multiple annual events to help both our national and local philanthropic commitment. These events account for the majority of both donations brought in and total community service hours.
The annual Walk to Cure Arthritis is an event hosted by the Arthritis Foundation® to not only raise awareness for those suffering with the disability, but to also help raise funds for researching a cure. For this event, we send many of our brothers to help set up, run, and cleanup after the event has finished.
For the 2014 walk, the majority of our Brothers went to help and were a vital part of running the event. You can read more about this experience in the news section.
Penny Wars is held during WPI’s homecoming week. For this event, all participating student organizations try and gain the most points. Points are earned by donating pennies to their respective organization’s jar. Organizations can also take points away from others by donating any other coin or bills to another organization’s jar. All proceeds are donated to the philanthropy of the winning organization’s choice.
This is another week-long event held during the winter. During this event, we set up at the fountain, as it is a central location on the campus. We make hot chocolate and hand it out to members of the WPI community passing by, and collect donations for the Habitat for Humanity.
Relay for Life
Started in 1985, Relay For Life is an event hosted by the American Cancer Society to help raise money for cancer research and recovery programs. As a fraternity, we participate in and fundraise for the annual walk at WPI. Visit the Relay For Life website to learn more about the walk and its mission.
